Cloud migration / Case study

A smoother move from local servers to AWS

We helped a 72-person professional services firm move 12 business applications and its shared data to AWS, with a staged cutover and a clear operational handover.

The firm relied on ageing servers, manual backup checks and remote access that was difficult to support. Annual infrastructure, licensing and support costs were £48,000, and the latest recovery exercise took six hours to restore a critical application. The migration had to fit around client deadlines and keep staff working throughout the move.

  1. 01

    Mapped the dependencies

We reviewed all 12 applications, identified their data and access dependencies, and agreed a cutover sequence with the business.

  2. 02

    Built the AWS foundations

We configured the network, access controls, monitoring and backups before moving production services.

  3. 03

    Migrated in stages

We tested the workloads, rehearsed the cutovers and moved the applications outside the busiest working periods, with rollback plans in place.

  4. 04

    Handed over the operation

We documented support responsibilities and recovery procedures, then ran a restore exercise with the internal IT team.

  • All 12 applications migrated within the 10-week delivery window
  • Annual infrastructure, licensing and support run rate reduced from £48,000 to £33,120
  • A critical application restored in 45 minutes during the post-migration recovery test, compared with six hours before the move
  • Clear access controls, monitored backups and recovery guidance handed over to the internal IT team

How we measured the results

We compared infrastructure, licensing and support costs on the same annualised basis using the first 90 days after migration, and timed the recovery exercise for the same application.
